Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. Q: How do I display all the records in the database?
    A: On the 'search database' page, enter criteria that will be true for all records e.g. id>0. Alternatively, use the 'browse database' page.
  2. Q: Can I export all the data to view in a spreadsheet?
    A: Yes, search for 'id>0' on the isolate search page, then click the 'Export' button. You can choose which fields you'd like to include in the dataset, enter your E-mail address and the data will be E-mailed to you in tab-delimited format.
  3. Q: I'm trying to search for isolates that I have submitted to a PubMLST database. When I search by my name as the sender no results are returned. How do I do this?
    A: Each user is assigned a number. This number is used in the isolates table of the database and cross-references to a user's table that contains all the information on the user. You need to use this number in your database search. To find out the number of a particular sender, select 'sender' and then click 'Show submitted or allowed field values' button on the main search page.
  4. Q: Where is the tree drawing option after a search?
    A: Tree drawing requires a java runtime environment to load in order to make the option available. In some browsers, this may take a few seconds to load, delaying the display of results. UPGMA tree drawing is often not that useful for MLST data so the option has now been switched off by default, ensuring faster display of results for the majority of users. If you require tree drawing, however, you can switch the option back on by going into the options menu, accessible from the database front page.
  5. Q: How do I search for an empty field value?
    A: Use the search term <blank>, e.g. 'serogroup = <blank>' (available in software version >= 1.5.8).
