START (Sequence Type Analysis and Recombinational Tests) version 2 is a selection of tools useful in the analysis of MLST data. These tools can be broadly divided into four categories:
- data summary
- lineage assignment
- tests for recombination
- tests for selection
START2 is written in Java and has been tested on Windows and Linux systems. It should work on MacOSX but has not been tested on this platform.
The easiest way to install START2 is via Java Webstart, which will also ensure that you are always running the latest version. You must have at least Java 2 Standard Edition version 5 installed (version 6 is preferred) which includes Webstart. Provided Webstart is properly associated with .jnlp files the program can be installed by clicking the link below:
2009-01-12: Recent versions of START2 did not work on Windows Vista or with Java 1.6. These problems stemmed from the use of an embedded native web browser to display results. Version 0.9.0beta is now available by clicking the 'Install START2' link. This uses an alternative embeddable results viewer which should work on all platforms (Windows, Linux and MacOSX). Printing is currently disabled directly from the program, but there is now an option to send results to your browser where you can print or further manipulate the output (Java version 1.6 or above is needed for this to work).
